Name: Utlay, Samuel Gladstone Born: 20 Nov 1868 Where: Elmira Parents: Sam'l + Mary (Elmira) Baptized: 28 Oct 1869 By: I. W. German, Woolwich
- The boy was naturally named after his father.
- William Gladstone was elected as the British prime minister for the first time in the same year, 1868. His middle name is a reminder of the family's English roots.
The Canadian Census of 1871 shows the family living in Listowel which the next town north and west of Elmira. It records a son, Samuel G., age 2.
Death
No record for the death of Samuel Gladstone has been found. Other information we do have suggests he died when.
- The Census in April 1871 lists six people in the family: Samuel and Mary and four children, William V., John H., Samuel G. and Agnes A.
- In November of 1872 a daughter, Mary Jane, was added to the group so that the Elmira Assessments in February 1873 list seven members of the family.
- Another son, James T., was born in May 1875. This added one person to the family and the Assessments show eight people in the family for the Assessments of 1876 and 1877. Samuel Gladstone was still alive when the 1877 Assessment was taken.
- In May of 1877 Edith was born. The number of people in the family should have grown to nine in the following year's Assessment, but it did not. The number remained at eight in March of 1878 and for 1879, 1880 and the 1881 Census which lists the names of all the children -- without Samuel Gladstone.
- Samuel Gladstone Uttley died after the 14 March 1877 Assessment date and before 27 March 1878 when the next Elmira Assessment was taken.
The location of the burial plot is not known. St. James Cemetery in Elmira, the family burying ground, is the obvious first choice.
This life was remembered when the second son of the family, John Herbert, named his fourth child Samuel Gladstone Uttley in 1899.
