Samuel Gladstone Uttley – 1868-1877


The first we knew of Samuel Gladstone Uttley, the third son of Samuel and Mary, came from the 1871 Census when the family lived in Listowel. More facts are known and inferrals can be made now.

Birth

The Wesleyan Baptisms for Waterloo County record the birth and baptism of Samuel Gladstone Uttley in Volume II, p353: [Baptism Entry]

     Name:       Utlay, Samuel Gladstone
     Born:       20 Nov 1868
     Where:      Elmira
     Parents:    Sam'l + Mary (Elmira)
     Baptized:   28 Oct 1869
     By:         I. W. German, Woolwich

The Canadian Census of 1871 shows the family living in Listowel which the next town north and west of Elmira. It records a son, Samuel G., age 2.

Death

No record for the death of Samuel Gladstone has been found. Other information we do have suggests he died when.

The location of the burial plot is not known. St. James Cemetery in Elmira, the family burying ground, is the obvious first choice.

This life was remembered when the second son of the family, John Herbert, named his fourth child Samuel Gladstone Uttley in 1899.
